Well, late summer has gone, early autumn is here and not a word yet...

No word from the beta testers either...

Saw Beta 3 yesterday. Looks great, very much is working. I would say, this
will become a great product.

Thanks Andreas.

IMHO, TD has a long way ahead to be a great product again, but let first
see what has been done.

Why dont they allow all to see the beta if its good? Is there some
decision taken by unify to keep out undesirable rogues from commenting
on it?? >

Thanks Everyone

A german partner has published some results after the first week of
testing. If you can understand german, have a look here:

In short: All 13 applications would compile at the end of the day, but
only 3 of them seemed to run flawless. Perhaps the results would be
better with Beta 3, but I don't think that we will see the new version
before november. However, I keeping my fingers crossed...

Hi Yoda,

I'll refrain from yoda-like writing, but hard it is... :-)

Unify has, over the years, tried many different types of beta programs.
We've done public betas, and those work well for products and
development cycles where we have a lot of time to respond and take in
beta reports.

However, for a compressed development cycle and short beta program, it
doesn't work so well in my experience. Too often, the information comes
in far too late in the cycle for it to be effective. Also, the
resources required to train and manage beta testers (and yes, that's
part of any beta... training the testers to get you the right kind of
information to fix bugs quickly, managing their use and testing of the
product) for a public beta is significantly more than for a private beta.

So, for this particular release, we chose to hand-pick our beta testers
(mostly for application size and complexity, size of installed base,
etc.) and get agreement up front that they would dedicate resource to
testing the product throughout the entire beta program.

This has nothing to do with fearing public comments, and everything to
do with maximizing resources and reducing development times. Everyone
that we talked to in the customer base said, "We want it yesterday!"
We're trying our best to comply.

I guess the thinking is: "Every Tom Dick and Harry would find issues
(sometimes even non-issues) and we (Unify) will never be able to meet our
deadlines".

Just one little observation:
What if, together with the current beta plan, you release a beta for public
testing?
What might be the disadvantages of this?

Chris,

I must comment your statement.
You, (Unify/Gupta) set the short development cycle, we didn't!
You, (same as above) choose to have a closed beta, not us.
So, if my code doesn't compile on the new exciting TD5.1, it's my
blame/shame??? I don't think so.

Well, I must say, as I have no comments for my posts from Guptify, only
from fellow users, I've been a loyal customer for years now.
And i still am. But...

Last year, in Milano, I had a word with Suren who was then the Number One,
predicting the fiasco with TD5.0. No comment.

This year, I have spent a month salary to be in Munich in October, and I
will be there.

I have users too, and when I promise them something I can't deliver, they
look for other solutions as well.

I didn't respond to David Dragers roadmap questions, as I think that those
are silly questions. What do you think, will anyone buy TD, only because
it's a .NET compiler???
There are better products that do that.
First, make it a state of the art 4/5/6GL language!
I don't mind if it produces .NET, .WHAT or pseudo .NOTHING, as long as it
is a GOOD development tool!
We all have been asking for years for features that TD still doesn't have.

So, just look behind!

Igor
