multiline data type at runtime

Hi,
Is it possible to determine the data type of a multiline field at
run-time(string/long string)? The case is; I want to run my project both on
Oracle and Sql Server, which requires to handle multilines as string or long
strings depending on the database brand used.

Thankf for any help.

Isn't it better to define the multiline field as a string and put the
contents of the multiline field into a long string variable when you need a
long string for updating the database.

When you read the data you do it the other way round.

G'day,

Would you mind expanding on why that is better?

When I read this topic I thought this could only be a problem when you have
different versions of an executable and depending on the DBMS system of the
customer you supply the one or the other. Otherwise it would not be a
problem because you know what the datatype of the multilinefield is.

With this in mind I should go for a solution which works on both platforms.

A long string can also handle strings. Just set it as long string. But a
multiline has a limit of 32000 characters. For more characters, please
see www.iceteagroup.com. In the teatalk section, there is a download of
a wrapper to an open source project called Scintilla. I think the title
is Using scintilla. It can handle any number of characters.
