Hi,

After the overwhelming feedback, I reduced the list of forums from 32 to 15, trying to accomodate all wishes, as listed below:
Cross Product
Team Developer
SQLBase

forum.gupta.faq
forum.td.deployment
forum.sqlbase

forum.gupta.jobnet
forum.td.development

forum.gupta.marketing
forum.td.web

forum.3rdparty.tools
forum.td.reportbuilder

forum.gupta.wishlist
forum.td.cdk

forum.gupta.connectivity
forum.td.tom

forum.gupta.bugreport
forum.td.sourcecode

Please let me know whether this works for all.

Thanks,
Suren Behari

I think it would work out well for me this way however I think few changes would make sense:

I considere the connectivity forum more a TD only topic (questions about connecting TD to any existing database; if a non TD user is having problems connecting to SQLBase this question probably would better fit in a sqlbase forum). So I think forum.td.connectivity would be a better name.

The wishlist and bugreport forums in my opinion would be better splitted into a td and sqlbase version ending with forum.td.wishlist, forum td.bugreport, forum.sqlbase.wishlist and forum.sqlbase.bugreport.

Thats fine. Good. Is small and workable. Smaller=Better

Martin's suggestions are okay too. You can split it if it makes sense.

forum.td.deployment can be removed. The main concern for us is that
people should not cross post. So we will have some problems people
deciding whether to post to the main forum or the deployment forum.
In this situation, people post in both the places. This forum makes
sense if things that worked in development dont work in deployment or
when people face deployment problems!. Thats very rarely the case

Thanks for the Hard work
Karthik

Hi Suren,

What will be the name of the new news server and when will it be implemented?

Hi Suren,

Looking good.

Would it be possible to add a short description of each forum to the
newsgroups listing, only to clarify what is supposed to be posted to
each forum? When one must put it in words the puzzle becomes
more complete. There are quite a few non native-English speakers
out there to whom a word like e.g. deployment has different meanings.

The listing and the descriptions would form an important function in the
FAQ.

Thanks.
Regards, Kriss

G'day,

I don't know how useful or appropriate, but how about a general forum (yet, of course, Gupta specific) on security to discuss design of secure apps/databases?

forgive me if I missed it --will all the current messages in the current
forums be migrated over?

i have lots of old forum messages 'bookmarked' and if you change the forum
names I'm gonna have to look them up and bookmark them again, right?
Perhaps I should download all messages from my favorite forums first, so I
have a local copy of the "old" forums?

I agree with you on the first part, I thought the same thing when I saw the
list, connectivity seem to be more suited for TD since there is a SQLBase
forum.

I'm not sure about the second part though. We asked for lesser forums and
I'm not sure there is really a need to split the wishlist/bugreport forums,
especially the wishlist one, I think it worked fine. Just my feeling, but
obviously you could make a case for both choices and you can't go wrong
either way. :)

I think it would work out well for me this way however I think few changes
would make sense:

I considere the connectivity forum more a TD only topic (questions about

Sure one wishlist and bugreport forum would serve well too but I thought it
would be clearer to keep specifically bugreports separated between the
products. Imagine if you search if someone already reported a specific
problem as a bug - if you do a keyword search you might easily end up with
results listing postings for both products - even so you are just interested
in one of them. For the wishlist forum I had the feeling it might be easier
for GUPTA and some people might only use TD and some only SQLBase so they
might feel better served if they only see things which are really of
interest for them.

I get the point. On the other hand it's kinda easy to check a simple
wishlist, where you could find every wish... TD wishes, SQLBase wishes,
Report Builder wishes, Christmas wishes ;), etc... and all that stuff,
without having to check different wishlists. :)

By the way, when I go on the wishlist to check if there are new messages
(which are rare anyway), I'm not necesarly waiting for a specific one...

But then again, it's just a matter of feelings I guess... :)

I'd like to retract that ... I think the current suggested list can handle anything related to security just fine.

Good job Suren and contributors.

Hi,

what about an additional forum "Test" (or something better) which can be
used instead of the many test posts staying around.
