Ever wanted to log a bug with Gupta but couldn't? You can now!

Hi All,

Gupta Technologies is pleased to announce its latest service to all
customers, enabling you to report bugs as soon as they come up. This
automated service contains a brief series of questions designed to
capture as much information as possible, as simply as possible.

Come visit the new service and share your input at:
http://www.guptaworldwide.com/tech/logabug/default.asp

The new Log-A-Bug service is a collection station that funnels the input
provided by customers directly into Engineering. The individual entries
will be compiled with others and assessed for inclusion in future PTFs
and releases. The process is anonymous, which facilitates the quick
delivery of the bug notification to Engineering, but does not accommodate
personalized replies or updates on an individual bug.

We thank you for your continued support of our products.

Alessa,
this sounds like a great idea.
But could I ask what technology this web site is written in? Could I hazard
a guess that it is not in Gupta products and/or Gupta partner products. I
would have been more happy to see .htt (ITAP) pages.

Thats great news !

I think everybody of us really appreciates this new service.
However I'm missing the SQLRouter sections for logging a bug.

Stefan.

Sounds like a very nice initiative, but is it just another of these half
good implementations of good ideas we have been presented the last years?

I tried to log a bug. First I am not able to report anything on 1.5.1.
"Luckily" this specific error still exists in 2.0 so I continued. Having
entered the description I was told that the next step would bring up my
email application for attachments etc. Well it did bring up Notes, but it
did not create a new message. I had expected an automatically created
message containing the information I just entered and, more important, the
mail address. So I just went back to Internet explorer, without having sent
a mail, and pressed "Finish" as I was told. Now I wonder if my report has
been registered at all since I did not send any mail. Is the mail just a
channel for additional information, or is that the actual registration
mechanism? If the report mechanism relies on an external mail system I would
expect it to work with a major system like Notes.

I bet it works with Outlook ...

Should Gupta be blamed for that ?
Dono ...
(html reference says: mailto: ... so I guess any "compatible" mailing system
should be able to create a new adress out of the reference provided ?!?)

Roger

Out of curiosity I tried some of the "contact us" mail adresses on the
guptaworldwide home page. They all worked with Notes mail. Again I tried to
LogAbug. When I eventually press the Send button Notes appears with the
message "File does not exists". So whom shall I blame?

NOT to say that it shouldn't work in Notes (which I like) and other popular
mail systems but it DOES work with Outlook, I tested it ...

Why don't you log-a-bug 'bout that ?

;-)))

Ivar,

I don't know that it was tested with Notes mail (rats)! I'll bring this up
to the PTB (Powers That Be) and see if we can get it corrected right away.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Dear Ivar,

Firstly, the idea of Log-A-Bug is to report bugs on currently supported
products (ie. products that are still having PTFs created for them). That's
why CTD 1.5.1 doesn't appear in the dropdown as a product to report a bug
on.

Secondly, this initiative has the backing of *all* the technical support
people at Gupta. They are *all* looking at bug reports that are sent to
this one mail address. Our goal is to put out a defect-free product and the
only way we can do this if we know what the defects are. That's where you
come in. We depend on you to let us know when a defect arises. Our
thoughts are that you shouldn't have to have a support contract with us to
report *our* bugs.

I've already responded that we're looking at the mail response of log-a-bug
and Lotus Notes mail. I'm sure that your reported defect didn't reach the
log-a-bug address. Until we get this fixed, can you please submit the
defect directly to the log-a-bug mail address. Be sure to include the
product, version (including PTF level), operating system and what problem
you're seeing. If necessary, please include a zipped attachment that
demonstrates what's gone wrong.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Best regards,

Radek,

The spec for this was 'easy to write, easy to maintain'. This is a simple
ASP page. Nothing fancy.

Mike,
they could have asked around for someone who had a
framework/architecture to make using ITAP 'easy to write, easy to maintain'.
We've got one. Total development effort would have been < 1 person-week.

Using ASP is sending the wrong message to the user community. Every chance
to show off your products needs to be taken advantage of. I remember when
Gupta change their inhouse bug tracking system from a SQLWindows/SQLBase
solution to some VB/Access app. SQLBase didn't work out of the box for 12
months (Remember V5???).

Does this facility allow one to report a problem regarding the
www.guptaworldwide.com Web site? I've sent e-mail to
webmaster@guptaworldwide.com, but that has produced no results (not
even an acknowledgement of receipt).

Peter,

Put it in. I'll try to 'heads-up' the Powers That Be.
