Door on the left, one cross each?

In July, we were hearing things like "we will be in the business of
providing great development solutions to our developers well in excess of
two years. I am looking at five years down the road", "we are locked in" and
"people know we are here to stay. I want them to feel confident that their
continuing decision to develop with Centura is the best decision they can
make". Now we're hearing talks of sales
(http://www.centurasoft.com/media_room/press/news.asp?newsID=220) and
business sections described as "legacy". Do these refer to different things
or has it been a dammed short 2-5 years?

Which products are covered by the "legacy client-server database software
business"?

Sounds like we're being sold out. Maybe Platinum Equity LLC will be better
at marketing, sales and support than Centura?

Is this a good or bad thing or us poor developers?

"legacy" means CTD (including CTD2000) and SQLBase mainly. Not eSNAPP,
db.star and Velocis.

Based on the informations I could collect until now I think it should be a
great thing for all users of CTD and SQLBase.

Platinum Equity seems to be a company that is purchasing companies with the
target to running them as a separate unit. It does absolutely not seem to be
their goal to squeeze out the last pennies and sell the company again.

Look at www.peh.com for further details about Platinum Equity.

Personally, this could be one of the best moves that could be made at this
time! I feel that Centura has never known how to properly market its products.
This sale will provide one more opportunity for a very good 4th generation
development tool to regain its prominence. Here is hoping!

Sounds like they may return to the Gupta name. Great!! Things have never
been the same since they dropped it. We're not dead yet!!

Martin,

I heartily concur! I've checked into Platinum as well and they seem to be
the ones to take the Centura 'legacy' products into the future. They are
backed by a billion dollars in assets! I've just signed up with them for
another year consulting contract.

Mike,

Do you mind giving us some more feelings regarding your (first) contact(s)
with PEH ?

Any idea what will happen to "Hydra" ?
Any feeling about what they intend to do with CTD ?

Also, what reputation has PEH in the US, resp. CA ?
Are they known ?
Do they have a good reputation or are they just an other (small) CA
(Computer Associates, the company's undertaker ?
(Down here in Europe I've never heard of them).

Best regards,
Roger

From what I read, Centura is still developing CTD2000 PTF2, and Hydra in
collaboration with Ice Tea Group. So, when does ownership of this product
actually get passed?

Roger,

I see this as extremely good for the current and future Centura customers.
The focus at Centura in the past year or so has been on the mobile products
(eSNAPP, etc.) almost to the exclusion of all else. The sale of the
'legacy' systems to Platinum (with its billion-dollar assets) means that
there will be the backing to really focus this division
on CTD and SQLBase. Platinum have assured us that they intend to build the
company back up.

Platinum have a very good reputation for acquiring flagging IT Technology
companies and making them viable in the market again by doing such things as
proper marketing (what a concept!!). They also have a reputation for
letting the companies acquired run themselves, ie. no 'slash and burning' of
personnel or takeover of senior management.

This takeover is something that I have been hoping for. Not a CA-type, but
someone who wants to build the company and its products.

"Legacy Forever"!

Check out the letter to customers on Centura's web site for how they plan to
go forward

Greg,

The deal should be finialized (being executed) in February.

However the deal also includes transfer of about 80 people from Centura. The
"legacy division" of Centura will probably be an independent company owned
by Platium. So the same people than today will stay in charge of future CTD
development. Just a new strategy will be in place coming from the new
owners. At least thats how I do understand the deal will work.

Hi Roger,

Hydra is currently being worked on. It will be much better
than the stuff I presented at the Centura Developers
Conference. ITG has statements from Centura that there are
currently no plans to change direction.

My personal feeling is, that things are going just fine.
The fact that an investor company like PEH (who are known
to *run* companies instead of killing them) thinks that
it's worth to pay $20M for CTD and Sqlbase, gives me the
impression that the products can't be that bad. I would
have been much more worried if PEH had decided *not* to
buy it. Maybe, we'll have to get used to a new name but
I guess we can all live with that.

AFAIK they are not related in any way.

Platinum Equity LLC is a privately owned company specialized in investing
and running in IT companies.

See www.peh.com for further details about it.
