Roger,

18 month later, Raima sells Centura ...<<

Not hardly! Here is my perspective/views.

The Raima deal got Centura Velocis and RDM database technology. This
purchase happened because Centura wanted a database that could go on a CE
device or a 'smart' card. They had tried to scale down SQLBase to that size
and failed. RDM had been running on these devices for years. So Centura
just purchased that technology. Velocis just came with the deal.

Then the push came to mobile devices and they wanted to concentrate on that
technology and put more money into that, but they still needed to support
the 'legacy' products. The best way to fix that problem was to isolate the
legacy products and make some short-term money on the sale (plus additional
revenue over the next 5 years) and not have to pay for development, support,
etc. for the old products. Overall that comes out pretty even. In my
opinion, the only reason that RDM and Velocis are included with the 'mobile'
side is because they *still* want the technology of an RDM database on a CE,
etc. device for use in eSNAPP (or @Once or ???) and the same people that
know RDM also know Velocis so it doesn't make sense to split them.

I feel this was a great decision by Centura management to allow a company to
acquire CTD/SQLBase/etc. with a focus on these products, since Centura
certainly only wanted to focus on mobile solutions. They see that as the
future for their company. Fair enough. Let Platinum have the 'legacy'
division and grow it like it should be grown, ie. they are committed to
putting money into marketing the products (like they should have been
marketed years ago!!) and further development of the products.

My two cents worth!

Why would Platinum Equity want the Centura products to get out of the
market?

Do they have something competing? At least I couldn't find something coming
from the companies they run.

I agree with you Mike and add two cents also ...

Managing new incoming on marker products or existing one is completely
different and centura doesn't have critical dimension to manage both
well ... The decision to sell ctd and sqlbase to somebody else is the
best decision taken by centura manage since year's ago

Is this decision the best for us is an another question. What to do ...
wait and see ... working on our centura project to be successfull with
current version .

See you next two months.

I definitly don't hink, don't believe, this deal is meant to have
ex-Centura's business (tool and database) to disapear from the market.

Maybe I'm to naïve, but I believe PEH bought ex-Centura eBusiness because
they believe they can make something with it (the bottom line being: win
money).

My concerns, and I think most customer's concerns are: WHAT will it bring
?!?

As long as we don't hear from PEH's management regarding their intentions
with ex-Centura, we are left in doubts regarding those intentions.

And even if PEH's intentions are "positive", there will remain doubts for a
while regarding their ability to do better than previous management(s).

Hence the urgency for a clear statement from PEH AND some concrete actions
we can use to make our opininion whether PEH will succeed or fail in
(finally) assuring ex-Centura a market presence it deserves.

Just my regular 2 cents ...

Regards,
Roger

Gianluca,

As you mentionned in you email (I appreciated):
"[...] my answer to your message might seem harsh against you. I didn't mean
it that way. [...] Sorry if the message seemed against you."

Again, (I allready said it), I am positive this deal could be positive to
ex-Centura (and as a matter of fact to us ex-Centura community).

Let's just no be as BLIND as we were (at least I was) in the past.
I WONT buy any promises any longer !
I wont FACTS.

Now on a less serious note:

Yes. I just don't understand why it's not yet the case !?! :-)

That's allready the case, no need to dream for this one ... :-)

You TOO heard about that ? :-))))))) (Just KIDING)

Why do you think to working at night would make the developpers work better
? ( ;-) still kiding)

NEVER ! (And I'm not kiding !)
I will continue to dream that ex-Centura could do better marketing and could
implement better features and should simply GET REAL !

"Real" regards ;-)

Roger,

could
implement better features and should simply GET REAL !<<

That's been my dream for some time, too! We're finally going to get that to
happen! I've heard what PEH's got to say about the upcoming things with the
Centura products; they just can't publish *anything* until the deal is done.
Just wait for it!! It will happen in February.

I have to say that SQLBase has got to be the most robust DB I have ever encountered (at least on a PC and I'm not referring to speed). I have it in use in some incredibly unfriendly environments. What concerns me is not what it has been or what it is but what it will be.

Have the new owners discovered this NG yet? Do they know it exists? Will they be continuing it?

No matter what the answer is, I still say it's been a dammed short 2 to 5 years!

That's the "new economy" : everything is speeding up ;-)

To quote an french ex-police minister "Les promesses ne servent qu'à ceux qui y croient" (promisses are only ll for the believers).
