Max amount of memory used by SQLBase 7.51

Hi all,

I used to work with SQLBase 6.12 and earlier versions and know that they
could only use up to 32MB of ram irregardless of how much you had available
on the server. This would be allocated between cache and sortcache as you
saw fit. I usually went with 24mb for cache and 8mb for sortcache.

I am trying to help someone with a performance problem on SQLBase 7.51 and
do not know if this still holds true.
Will this version of SQLBase use more than 32mb?
If so, is it still allocated between cache and sortcache or is there new
paramters to set?

thanks,

clay

Cache cannot be greater than 32MB (cache=32767)
Sortcache can take any limit up to 25% of total RAM minus the 32MB for cache.

That said, sortcache was disabled for SQLBase 7.5.x so go with 7.6.1PTF2 it's
the most current version and, with sortcache re-enabled, faster than 7.5.x

There is an excellent performance paper posted on the Centura website at:

http://www.centurasoft.com/tech/whitepapers.asp

called SQLBase Performance (SQLBase Performance.pdf).
Download and read it as it goes into some depth and has some suggestions for
setting sortcache in 7.6.x.

Without knowing what sort of performance problems you are having I would
start with the basics:
1, Backup the database
2. Unload/load the database
then
3. Run update statistics

You might post to the SQLBase newsgroup at

talkto.centurasoft.com

Hope this helps.

Thanks Blind Newsboy.

I found out that 7.5.1 re-enables the sort cache parameter.
I had already asked the user to update statistics and reorg the database.
They updated statistics and all is once again well within their world.

I did download the article you suggested and found alot of good info.
The client application will not support gupta past 7.5.1 so moving to a
later version is not an option but I appreciate the advice.
I also got hooked up with the centura newsgroups so appreciate that pointer
too.

Thanks for your help.
