Error...Cannot open printer

I am getting this error on one of my stations. Another station that
particular form prints totally blank. Yet another station prints the form
just fine. How do I get my forms to behave and print consistantly? Why are
my forms printing station specific like this?

Marivn,

I think we'd need some more details about what you are trying to print.
What do you mean exactly by "forms" ? Usually, people use ReportBuilder
to print reports. Printing a form is one single Sal statement. Also,
tell us what version of SQLWindows (16-bit, 32-bit ?) you are using,
against which database.

Sorry about the vuageness of my post.

I am using SQLBase 6.1.2 ptf9. 32bit.

Which database? I am using Visual Manufacturing, a financial/manufacturing
program.

I am trying to print a report. I have been editing it in Quest, trying to
get the data to print in the 'boxes' on the form that I am trying to get it
print onto. I print it to a my local printer to check it as I am changing
the formatting. Later I print if off of one of the other workstations and I
get a 'Centura Builder - Error - Cannot open printer' error box. Yesterday
I actually got the error to appear on my own station. When I try to print
off of yet a different station, It will print a blank page.

Is there a place to set which printer a form will print on?

Why am I getting inconsistant printing from these reports?

What does the error message mean? Where do I look it up. I checked the
Centura site and got nothing. I have looked in the 'online' books that we
get with Visual and have found nothing there.

Hoping to print,
Marv

Marvin,

Now I get the picture a bit better. So you don't have CTD or SQLWindows,
but you have the 32-bit SQLBase database version, and you try to make a
report with Quest, which is a 16-bit tool. As I have lost the ability to
run Quest (to my great disappointment) togetherwith CTD and SQLBase
32-bit, I unfortunately can't reproduce your problems, but I can imagine
that they come from the chanes made to ReportBuilder which is now buil
in CTD and has replaced entirely Quest. My guess is that whatever 32-bit
you are in fact quicking of when trying to run your report does not
really understand the .qrp file generated by 16-bit Quest. I don't
remember offhand, but probably the printer is stored in the .qrp, and
that could be your problem.

Check if you don't happen to have the 32-bit ReportBuilder in the
SQLBase software directory. It's called REPBI11.EXE. This would be a
MUCH better starting point, although Quest IS a very good product, and
we developers/users are very sad that it has been discontinued, because
it just has not been replaced by any of the would-be substitutes
provided by Centura.

On top of that, there are currently quite a few printer problems with
the various CTD (Centura Builder) versions around, so these problems
maybe compound with your somewaht "exotic" setup.

If you can get the ODBC driver for SQLBase to work with MS Access, you
might be better off trying that route.

Hi

You can use the qckrpt.apl to get the class for editing the report, there in
the class there is functions to change the printer in the report.

I use it to change printer for a report..

Fred,

What you are saying sounds very good, only I don't quite know what you mean.
Where do I find that file? I don't see it anywhere on my system. (Is that
part of a version beyond 6.1.2?) What do you do with an apl file?

Bernard,

I just don't understand why it would work on some clients and not on others.

I will try editing the file with Centura report builder and saving it, and
see if that changes the situation at all.

I do have the ODBC working and use it. My life would be much worse if I
didn't have that. But I don't want to use that to print the forms. The qrp
reports tie right into the financial/manufacturing software, I would much
rather use that which someone else has already created than have to create
fresh.

CTD? Is this Centura builder? How do I make sure that I have consistancy
in the versions that I have.

The printer does seem to be stored in the file some how. But this seems to
be a bit useless. It either can be set to use default printer or it uses a
stored printer, but, if the stored printer in local on my machine and a
networked printer on the other client then the print operation dies. Argh.

Hi

Once I had this same problem. The solution was to copy this qrp file from
other working workstation because the one that I tried to use was corrupted.
Remember that Visual Manufacturing was made using CTD and changing a report
that was modify by report builder is not good idea trying to load it again
with Quest.

Sorry for this question, but are you sure that your default printer is not
other device like a Fax or something like that? Did you check the default
printer in the qrp file before saving it?

Hope this helps

Marvin,

YOU can't do much with an .apl file, as you don't have CTD (Centuta Team
Builder, the development environment. I understand you'd like to use the
qrp files as they stand, but I'm afraid they have been created too long
ago with a tool which makes them now incompatible with the software you
have.

The bottom line, though, seems to me to be the software supplier who
wrote your app in the first place. THEY should provide you with properly
functioning reporting capabilities with whatever version of the database
comes along !
